5 Bowling Tips for Beginners (From the Pros!)
1. Pick the Right Size Ball
Typically, the ideal bowling ball weight for women is around 11-12 lbs, and 14-15 lbs for men. That said, what matters most is what fits and feels best for you! A heavier ball has more force to knock down pins, but a lighter ball allows you a little more control. Wider finger holes give you room to breathe, but tighter finger holes may be more secure. Don’t be afraid to test out different balls at the bowling alley upon your arrival, and remember that it’s not about how strong you seem, but how comfortable you feel.
2. Relax Your Posture
Contrary to what some may believe, putting too much muscle into your swing may cause your throws to be awkward and clunky. By maintaining a relaxed position, you can breathe through and balance your swing with ease.
3. Find Your Speed & Aim
General rule of thumb: if you approach the line slow, start with the ball at chest level. If you approach the line fast, start with the ball somewhere between the thigh and waist.
The little dots and arrows on the lanes are also important to keep your eyes on! Use them to aim for the pins you’re targeting. You can begin with a straight shot down the middle, but feel free to adjust and play around with your starting point as the game progresses.
Be sure to keep in mind that every lane is different, so depending on the wax, warp, and humidity, the path of the ball may change for reasons beyond your control!]
4. Follow Through
This is one of the most important aspects of consistent bowling: following through. Your ending arm position should be around head height with your thumb pointing over the same shoulder. An easy way to check and see if your form and follow through are correct is to freeze at the end of your release.
From there, there’s nothing left to do except….
5. Practice, Practice, Practice!
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and pro-bowlers were not made overnight. If you commit to spending several hours a week at the bowling alley and take the steps to self-evaluate and self-reflect, you’ll see yourself improving in no time. Bring along a few friends, and your practice time will be so fun that it won’t feel like practice at all!
